“The ultimate light show”

In 1956 Swarovski in Austria began working with Christian Dior on a new crystal – Aurora Borealis – that encapsulated Dior’s creative vision. The lower facets of clear crystals were coated with a micro-thin layer of vaporised blue metal, resulting in an explosion of translucent, rainbow-hued, refracted light with an “otherworldly” feel evocative of the Northern Lights.

The discovery quickly become a fashion phenomenon because of its beauty and versatility. The crystals picked up surrounding colors from fabrics, creating a totally new dimension. As soon as Dior’s exclusive rights to Aurora Borealis ended it was snapped up by the respected jewellery couturiers of the era such as Elsa Schiaparelli, Trifari and Bogoff.
