Rare Art Deco black enamel and Platinon cufflinks

These rare and highly collectable 1920s Platinon cufflinks feature rectangular faces with rounded edges that are finely etched and inset with bands of black enamel. They connect with a five-link chain and measure 16 mm x 10 mm. There is minor wear to the faces on very close inspection, but not enough to detract from their grandeur.

These cufflinks are stamped ‘Platinon’ on the reverse. Platinon is an extremely rare metal alloy invented to imitate platinum. It has a natural patina and, importantly, it doesn’t tarnish. It was used for only a few years during the 1920s to produce high quality pieces of costume jewellery which are now, not surprisingly, highly collectable. Jewellery made of Platinon first featured at the British Industries Fairs in 1922 and 1929 and was marketed as “The Reputable Platinum Imitation – Finest Finish – Untarnishable.”
