Murat mother-of-pearl and faux pearl vintage cufflinks
These high quality cufflinks by Murat of Paris feature a quintessential mother-0f-pearl “button” design with a whaleback bridge and an etched retainer. There is a faux pearl in the centre of the button, which is set in a gold filled decorative frame.
Stamped Murat on the reverse of the retainer, these cufflinks probably date from the mid 1900s. The round faces measure 15 mm across and the retainer is 22 mm long.
La Maison Murat was founded in Paris by Charles Murat in the mid 1800s and became one of the largest employers in the French jewellery trade. Murat patented a technique known as ‘doublé or’ where high content gold was applied to fine quality jewellery and artefacts at less cost, so appealing to a wider market. The company’s reputation for high quality ensured an enthusiastic following which endures to this day.
