Delicate 1920s Art Deco Platinon crystal drop necklace

This wonderful Art Deco Platinon necklace dates from the 1920s is both bold and delicate in its design.

Square cut and round unfoiled crystals alternate in dainty open-back settings that emphasise their sparkle. This “double chain” comes together beautifully in the centre where it attaches to a large crystal pendant to dramatic effect. The oval pendant is faceted and sparkles beautifully.

The necklace fastens with a bolt ring clasp that is stamped ‘Platinon’. It is 42 cm long and the drop is an additional 5 cm. The crystal itself is 24 mm long and 17 mm wide. The necklace is in very good antique condition for its age with only one or two tiny nibbles around the edges of the crystal drop when seen under magnification.

Platinon is an extremely rare metal alloy invented to imitate platinum. It has a natural patina and, importantly, it doesn’t tarnish. It was used for only a few years during the 1920s to produce high quality pieces of costume jewellery which are now, not surprisingly, highly collectable. Platinon bracelets are especially hard to find.

Jewellery made of Platinon first featured at the British Industries Fairs in 1922 and 1929 and was marketed as “The Reputable Platinum Imitation – Finest Finish – Untarnishable.”
